Cat Weight Calculator

Is your cat at a healthy weight? Check their body condition and find out what to discuss with your vet.

Start with weight and body shape

A number on the scale cannot tell the whole story. Add a body condition score if you know it, or use the guide below.

Your cat

Changing units converts the weight you entered. Decimals are welcome.

Body condition

Use the guide if you are unsure. Keep “Not sure yet” selected when the signs are unclear.

How do I check body condition?

Watch your cat standing comfortably, then gently feel the ribs if they are happy to be handled. These sketches show where to look; they do not assign a score.

Look from aboveNotice whether the body narrows behind the ribs. Fur can hide the waist.
Gently feel the ribsNotice how easily you can feel them and how much soft covering there is. Stop if your cat is uncomfortable.

A belly pouch or body weight alone cannot tell you the score. Age, muscle and health need context. Keep “Not sure yet” selected if the signs are unclear.

Changing portions

Do not start a crash diet. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous for cats.

A few common questions

Can this tool tell me my cat's ideal weight?

It provides a rough estimate when you know the body condition score. Your vet can confirm a suitable weight after considering muscle, age, breed and health history.

Is it safe to reduce food quickly if the score is high?

No. Cats should not crash diet. Use the result as a note for a veterinarian or a gradual feeding review.

About this tool

Your cat's health and history can change what is right for them. Use these results to support a conversation with your veterinarian. They cannot confirm a diagnosis or prescribe treatment.

How this tool works

Body condition adds context to weight. The target shown is an approximation; the frame ranges and some target steps are site estimates.

View rules and sources
  1. Body condition scale

    Reference + site choice

Whole-number BCS from 1 to 9; an unknown score produces no target.

The nine-point feline scale is published. Requiring whole numbers and leaving unknown values unscored are interface rules; a user entry is not a clinical assessment.

  2. Displayed condition bands

    Reference + site choice

1–3 below ideal; 4 lean; 5 around ideal; 6–7 above ideal; 8–9 high.

These labels condense the chart into navigation bands. The reference chart also treats BCS 4 as ideal, and notes that 6 may be acceptable in some cats; the site's labels are not identical.

  3. Approximate excess-weight steps

    Published value

    BCS 6, 7, 8 and 9 correspond to about 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% excess weight.

This is an approximation from the published table, not a precise body-fat measurement or an individual goal.

  4. Target-weight approximation

    Reference + site choice

    Above BCS 5: weight ÷ [1 + 0.1 × (BCS − 5)]. Below 5: weight ÷ max[0.5, 1 − 0.1 × (5 − BCS)].

The source supports approximate excess-weight steps above ideal. The reciprocal calculation is this site's implementation; extending the same step below ideal is a site estimate, not a validated underweight target.

  5. Adult frame context

    Site estimate or rule

Small: 2.8–4.7 kg; average: 3.2–5.8 kg; large: 4.2–7.2 kg.

These general frame ranges are site editorial values. No checked source establishes them as breed-independent healthy-weight limits.

  6. Target exclusions

    Reference + site choice

No adult target for kittens or pregnant cats.

Growth and gestation have different nutritional needs. Suppressing adult targets is a site guardrail; it is not a feeding plan for either group.

  7. Weight units

    Published value

    1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.

This is the published standard pound-to-kilogram conversion, not a health rule.

Published values support the stated reference scope. They do not establish the accuracy or clinical validity of this tool.
