Cat Age Calculator: Cat Years to Human Years
Convert your cat's age in years and months to approximate human years. See the 15–9–4 method, an age chart, and care guidance for each life stage.
Enter your cat's age
Enter years and any extra months. Human years are an approximate comparison; your cat's health matters more than the number.
How the age comparison works
The central estimate follows the familiar 15–9–4 comparison: about 15 human years at a cat's first birthday, 24 at the second, then four more for each additional cat year. This is a rough analogy, not a biological age measurement or lifespan prediction.
For extra months, we use years + months / 12. Up to one year, the estimate is age × 15; between one and two years, it is 15 + (age − 1) × 9; after two years, it is 24 + (age − 2) × 4. We round to a whole year before displaying the result.
The displayed range is that rounded estimate minus two to plus two, with a lower limit of one. This range is an editorial display choice, not a measured confidence interval. Month-by-month interpolation, especially for kittens, does not imply precise developmental equivalence.

Age labels and limits
Our navigation uses Kitten (1–5 months), Junior (6–11 months), Adult (1–6 years), Mature (7–10 years), Senior (11–14 years), and Geriatric (15 years onward). These are site navigation bands, not the AAHA four-stage classification.
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP framework instead groups cats as kitten (under one year), young adult (1–6 years), mature adult (7–10 years), and senior (over ten years). Your veterinarian can assess your cat's needs regardless of either label. This calculator accepts 1–360 whole months; it does not assess health, breed-specific aging, or neonatal development.
For household planning, pair the estimate with the life-stage care guide. Share or cite this method and its limitations alongside any result.

A few common questions
Is cat age in human years exact?
Human years are an approximate comparison, not a measure of health. Individual health, breed, and history matter more than a single number.
What should I do with the life-stage result?
Use it to check whether food, activity, litter access, vet visits, and routine expectations still fit your cat's stage.

How this tool works
Human years are a rough comparison. Whole-year anchors have historical reference support; extra-month interpolation and the displayed range are site estimates.

Whole-year comparison
Published valueCat age 1 → 15 human years; 2 → 24; after 2, add 4 per cat year.
These anchors match the historical chart's comparison. They do not measure biological aging, health or life expectancy.
Extra months
Site estimate or ruleYears = months ÷ 12. Up to 1: years × 15; 1–2: 15 + (years − 1) × 9; later: 24 + (years − 2) × 4. Round to whole years.
The continuous month formula is site interpolation. The reference's early kitten examples are not linear and can differ from this result.
Displayed range
Site estimate or ruleCentral result ±2 human years, with the lower endpoint at least 1.
This display range is a site convention, not a statistical confidence interval.
Site navigation stages
Site estimate or ruleKitten 1–5 months; junior 6–11; adult 12–83; mature 84–131; senior 132–179; geriatric 180+.
These six site bands differ from the current four-stage AAHA/AAFP framework. The 1–360-month input limit is an interface limit.
